Sheffield Forgemasters - Large Volume Part Measurement 04/05/2008
Project to determine a methodology for measuring the accuracy of large volume castings and forgings and to identify the most suitable equipment to carry it out.
Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd (SFIL) is a world leader in supplying total engineering packages to solve industry's needs. As the world's largest independently owned forgemaster, SFIL specialises in a broad range of heavy steel forgings and steel castings as well as stocking steel ingot and bar.

During its 200 year history SFIL has produced some of the largest bespoke engineered products in the world and has the capacity for steel castings of up to 350 tonnes and steel forgings of up to 200 tonnes.

Project Duration - One weeks consultancy.

Overview of Project

The aim of the project was to determine a methodology for measuring the accuracy of large volume castings and forgings and to identify the most suitable equipment to carry it out.

The company heard about the expertise, facilities and resources available within CECA through the local Business Link in South Yorkshire. Forgemasters were interested in the large volume measurement capabilities of CECA to assist them in improving the accuracy and speed of measuring large castings and forged parts.

The work undertaken included:

• Requirements capture and specification – To define the technical requirements of the customer.

• Equipment assessment – To determine the most suitable measurement equipment for use within the environment at Forgemasters.

• Measurement methodology – Identifying the best solution for measurement of large parts.

• Sample measurement – On site demonstration at Forgemasters and measurement by CECA of 3 tonne forging using API Laser tracker

• Recommendations – Report offering recommendations and sample measurement data.

Impact/Benefits

Sheffield Forgemasters involvement with CECA has enabled them to add a new metrology capability to speed up and increase accuracy of measurements. On CECAs recommendations, Forgemasters purchased a laser tracker from API (who are also one of CECAs main partners) and are continuing to develop their measurement capabilities with success.
